He was...magnificent.
Beautiful in the way pain was beautiful, because it tugged at the chest and made something visceral come alive in the stomach and caused blood to simmer in the veins. Enchanting in the way she imagined dark magic was, because it twisted the air around it and warped the mind and overpowered the senses. Haunting in the way only very few living things could be, because it sent a shiver down the spine and cloaked itself in the darkness and fed on the energy around them.

Books had become her refuge, especially books with men- humans, shapeshifters, or aliens who fell in love hard and claimed their women body and soul were her favorite.
Corvina wanted that. She wanted to belong, to be loved, to be absolutely adored, no matter what happened, despite her past. She craved it so badly in her bones, some days she thought she would die from the sheer hunger of it. There was a gnawing ache in her soul and she desired so, so deeply. But she knew the books she read were fictional, and chances of her, of all people, finding anything remotely similar were slim.

Being different is your double-edged sword. One day, you'll find your shield to match.

"I love you Jacks."
He closed his eves as she said the word love.
" I've made my decision, Jacks. It's you. It will always be you, untill the end of time. And I'll fight fate or anyone else who tries to tear us apart-including you. You are my choice .You are my love. You are mine. And you are not going to be the end of me, Jacks."
"I think I already am." He opened his eyes and they dripped red tears, "Let me go, Evengeline."
"Tell me you won't set fire to your heart, and I will let you go."
"Don't ask me to do that."
"Then don't ask me to let you go."
His eyes bled more tears. "I'm broken, I like to break things. Sometimes I want to break you."
"Then break me, Jacks."

He had been the moon and she'd been the tide, controlled by his impossible force.

But the problem with wanting something you can't have, or shouldn't have, is that the second it seems possible, all reason flees. Reason and wanting go well together only when reason encourages a person to get what they want. Any reason opposed to this want becomes the enemy.

He was like a poisoned fairy fruit - one bite ruined a person for anything else.

Evangeline finally tore her hands free, reared back, and pointed her dagger directly at his heart. Her hands were shaking but her voice was still furious and hurt. "I saw your portrait in the scandal sheets along with a story about everyone you murdered last night!"
"I didn't murder anyone last night."
"You killed someone in front of me"
"That wasn't murder. He was trying to kill you.
I deserve this" he said. "I probably deserve a lot worse. But this is not the day to kill me. I'm trying very hard to keep you alive."
Jacks grabbed her and flipped her over, trapping her beneath him.
"yes, I'm a murderer. I enjoy hurting people; I like blood, and I like pain. I'm a monster but whether you remember it or not, I'm your monster Evangeline"

The problem with hope was also what made it so wonderful. Once a bit of hope had come to life, it was difficult to kill.

He wanted a piece of her. To keep her. To use her for later.
At least that's what he'd told himself.
She was only a key.
A human.
She wasn't an obsession.
She wasn't his.

She craned her neck to see his face. Wet hair covered her eyes and rain obscured her vision. But when she finally glimsed her rescuer, the world was suddenly brighter.
He was beautiful. Inhuman. A warrior angel with blue eyes and golden hair and a face that made Evangeline think that writing poetry should be her
new hobby. He almost appeared to be glowing. It made her wonder if he was right, if maybe she really was half dead and he was the angel taking her to heaven.

It was the sort of voice she would have obeyed even if her life hadn't depended on it. It wasn't kind, but it was full of power and sharp as an arrow's tip.

Hoping and imagining and believing in magic had always been like breathing to Evangeline.
~ A Curse for True Love

The girl was dead if her lifeless body had not confirmed it, then it would have been made clear by the horrible scream of the Fate who held her in his arms. The story curse was familiar with pain, but this was agony, the sort of raw grief that was only seen once in a century. The Fate was every tear that anyone had ever shed for lost love. He was pain given form.

"You want me to bring her back?"
"No." Evangeline replied. But it was too quick .
A smile tugged at the corner of Jack's mouth "Jealous. Little Fox?"
"Absolutely not- I don't like it when you use your powers to control people."
"You've asked me to do it in the past"
"I had a good reason."
"I actually believe you would have done the North a tremendous favor by ridding it of your stepsister, but we can always fix that mistake later. Jacks rolled a black apple
back and forth across the edge of the table with his palm. "Now, did you want something? Or just my attention?"
"you're asking the wrong girl, Jacks. Unlike her, I know you're not a God."
"yet you're the one who prayed at my church."

She used to think love was like a house. Once it was built, a person got to live in it forever.
But now she wondered if love was more like a war with new foes constantly appearing and battles creeping up. Winning at love was less about succeeding in a battle and more about continuing to fight, to choose the person you loved as the one you were willing to die for, over and over.
- Evangeline Fox

Happy endings can be caught, but they are difficult to hold on to. They are dreams that want to escape the night. They are treasures with wings. They are wild, feral, reckless things that need to be constantly chased, or they will certainly run away.

Truth is often bitter, particularly when a person has been tasting more enjoyable lies.
To remedy, you will need to erase the sweet taste of falsehood.
