For such individuals, it is rightly said that not only have we played a flute before a snake, but we have also tried to charm a buffalo with it.
Symbolism Explained:
A snake is a naturally hostile creature, while a buffalo is characteristically dull and insensitive. Expecting good from either is unrealistic. Similarly, a person devoid of conscience and heart, despite hearing the most eloquent words of truth, remains unaffected unless they themselves seek guidance.
Prophetic Wisdom:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) beautifully illustrated this reality:
> "The example of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not is like the living and the dead."
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 6407)
Example of Prophet Nuh’s People:
The Qur'an mentions the people of Prophet Nuh (Noah, peace be upon him):
> "And indeed, whenever I invited them so that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears."
(Surah Nuh: 7)
Biblical and Torah References:
A similar condition prevailed during the time of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). In the Bible (New Testament), it is recorded:
> "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
(Matthew 11:15)
But despite this call, many remained blind and deaf to guidance.
The Torah also mentions such obstinate people:
> "But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears."
(Zechariah 7:11)
Qur’anic Perspective:
Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an:
> "Indeed, you will not make the dead hear, nor will you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs retreating."
(Surah An-Naml: 80)
And again:
> "And We have placed coverings over their hearts, lest they understand it, and deafness in their ears."
(Surah Al-Kahf: 57)
Such is the state of people who listen to the truth yet refuse to comprehend. The Prophets (peace be upon them) tirelessly conveyed the message of God to their nations, but many remained stubborn and rebellious.
Title: “Forget the Snake, We Even Played the Flute Before a Buffalo”
Written by: Hakim-ul-Ummat, Allama Dr. Muhammad Owais Khan Tareen
Introduction:
Throughout history, countless individuals were addressed with the voice of truth, given wise counsel, and called towards the message of God. Yet, many remained steadfast in their arrogance, pride, and ignorance, refusing to accept the truth. In such moments, the famous Urdu proverb finds deep meaning:
"To play a flute before a snake"
And when one says:
"Forget the snake, we even played the flute before a buffalo,"
it implies making efforts to advise those whose hearts are entirely closed to guidance and wisdom.
Supplication
O Allah! Grant us perfect, sincere, and steadfast faith. Bless us with life upon faith, and grant us death upon faith. Ameen.

Types of Faith
1. Iman Mujmal (Summary Faith)
To believe generally in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day.
2. Iman Mufassal (Detailed Faith)
To believe in every article of faith with full detail.
Conclusion
Faith is a comprehensive and fundamental reality that has remained the foundation of every divine religion. The Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the Qur’an — all have commanded faith. Every prophet invited his nation towards belief in Allah.
Without faith, no action is accepted, and it is this light of faith that grants success in this world and the Hereafter.
This is essentially the foundation of faith. 2. Psalms (Zabur)
Prophet Dawud (David) said:
"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord."
(Psalm 40:4)
This too is a definition of faith. 3. Gospel (New Testament)
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) said:
"If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move."
(Matthew 17:20) 4. Bible (Both Old and New Testaments)
Faith is considered a prerequisite for salvation:
"And without faith, it is impossible to please God."
(Hebrews 11:6)
The Relationship Between Faith and Action
The Qur’an declares:
"Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds."
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 25)
Meaning, faith and good deeds are interlinked.
4. Belief in the Messengers
"All have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers."
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 285)
5. Belief in the Last Day (Hereafter)
6. Belief in Divine Destiny (Qadr) Both its good and bad aspects.
Faith in the Noble Hadith
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Faith consists of over seventy branches. The highest of which is to declare 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah), and the lowest is to remove something harmful from the road."
(Sahih Muslim: 1/63)
The Concept of Faith in the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the Bible
1. Torah (Old Testament)
In Deuteronomy:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength."
(Deuteronomy 6:5)
Faith in the Holy Qur’an
The Qur’an mentions faith in hundreds of places. A few examples:
"O you who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the Book which He has sent down to His Messenger, and the Scriptures which He sent down before."
(Surah An-Nisaa: 136)
Fundamental Articles of Faith (According to Qur’an and Hadith)
1. Belief in Allah
"The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah."
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 285)
2. Belief in the Angels
"And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels..."
(Surah An-Nisaa: 136)
3. Belief in the Heavenly Books
Including the Qur’an, the Torah, the Psalms, the Gospel, and other divine scriptures.
Linguistic Meaning of Faith (Iman)
In Arabic, the word Iman means: To believe, to affirm, and to find inner peace and certainty.
The Qur’an reflects this meaning:
"And you would not believe us, even if we were truthful."
(Surah Yusuf: 17)
Technical Definition of Faith in Shari’ah
In Islamic terminology: Faith is to believe with the heart, to affirm with the tongue, and to act upon it with the limbs.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and in destiny its good and its bad."
(Sahih Muslim: 1/36, Hadith: 8)
What is Faith (Iman)? In the Light of the Qur’an, Hadith, and the Heavenly Scriptures
Written by:
Hakim-ul-Ummat Allama Dr.Muhammad Awais Khan Tareen
Introduction
Since the beginning of time, human nature has held an inherent desire to seek a higher, supreme Being and to believe in Him. In every era, Allah Almighty sent His Prophets to invite humanity towards faith, and He explained the essence of faith in various heavenly scriptures.
Let us explore the complete concept of faith in the light of the Holy Qur’an, the noble sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the previous revealed books the Torah, the Psalms (Zabur), the Gospel (Injeel), and the Bible.
The sole path to success lies in being a true Muslim, devoted to following Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
An Invitation to Reflect
Let us all abandon sectarianism and group fanaticism, and embrace the way of the Qur'an, Sunnah, and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), for indeed this is the only path to salvation.

However, in later history, the name Shi’a became associated with a specific sect, which emerged following incidents like the Battles of Jamal, Siffin, and the tragedy of Karbala. Yet, in the Qur'anic context, Shi’a simply means a faction and forming factions in religion is strictly forbidden.
Summary and Conclusion
Islam is the religion of unity, brotherhood, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
Sectarianism, group fanaticism, and denominational prejudice are strongly condemned in the Qur'an and Hadith.
Religion demands adherence solely to the Qur'an, Sunnah, and the method of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
Those who split into sects are deserving of Allah's warning.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said:
> "Beware of sectarianism, for indeed those before you were destroyed because of it."
(Musnad Ahmad: 17161)
Position of the Pious Predecessors (Salaf as-Saliheen)
Renowned scholars such as Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Qatadah, Mujahid, Hasan Basri, and other commentators and Imams have unanimously held that:
> "Those who divide the religion into factions and groups have no association with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)."
The Literal Meaning of 'Shi’a'
In classical Arabic, the word Shi’a refers to a follower, group, or faction. For example:
> "And he was one of his party (Shi’ah)."
(Surah Al-Qasas: 15)
No sect, jurisprudential school, or group that disrupts unity holds the authority to override this.
In the Light of Prophetic Sayings (Ahadith)
Prophecy and Warning about Sectarianism
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
> "My Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of them in Hell except one."
The companions asked: "Who will they be, O Messenger of Allah?"
He replied: "The one who follows what I and my Companions are upon."
(Sunan Tirmidhi: 2641)
Explanation:
Salvation is destined only for the group that strictly follows the way of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his noble Companions. Groups formed on sectarian foundations are on a path of ruin.
Dividing the religion and forming separate paths is a rebellion against Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
Surah Ar-Rum (30:32):
> Translation:
"Of those who have divided their religion and become sects, every faction rejoicing in what it has."
Explanation:
Every group considers its sect and ideology as the absolute truth, while the true religion is based on obedience to the Qur'an and Sunnah not on the foundation of sectarian division.
Surah Aal-e-Imran (3:103):
> Translation:
"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided."
Explanation:
The 'rope of Allah' refers to the Qur'an and Sunnah.
In this article, we will present a detailed account of this topic in the light of Qur'anic verses and Prophetic sayings highlighting the consequences of sectarianism and the true message of Islam.
Condemnation of Sectarianism in the Light of the Holy Qur'an
Surah Al-An’am (6:159):
> Translation:
"Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects — you, [O Muhammad], are not [associated] with them in anything. Their affair is only left to Allah; then He will inform them about what they used to do."
Explanation:
This noble verse is a clear warning for those who fragment the religion of Islam into sects and groups. The word Shi’a here refers to factions or divisions.

Title: The Qur'anic and Prophetic Method on Sectarianism and Group Division
Author: Hakim-ul-Ummat Allama Dr. Muhammad Awais Khan Tareen
Introduction
Allah Almighty revealed the religion of Islam for the guidance of humanity, a religion based entirely on unity, brotherhood, and complete obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). Sadly, over time, the Muslim Ummah has fallen into the trap of sectarianism and group divisions, an act which is severely condemned in both the Qur'an and Hadith.
